Route Map
Accomodation
1. Nyngan – Outback Motor Inn – Intended to reach Bourke however arrived late in this town (Approx 8pm). the last servo (Shell) closes at 830pm so I was lucky to get a meat pie and drink from here. Unfortunately all pubs were shut and hence no longer taking accommodation requests and motels were full. With the only prospect left of sleeping next to my bike behind the servo, the lady who ran the servo was kind enough to call around for me and I managed to get the last room at the Outback Motor Inn for $103.00. Well equipped and clean accommodation. Off-road parking
2. Tambo – Tambo Pub – Another town I had not planned to stop at, however, ran out of daylight to push on towards Longreach. very small town with one pub and a caravan park. Motel room was quite sparse but beds were clean, bathroom not so much. Motel room for $85. Family run burger shop was sufficient for food.
3. Kynuna, QLD – Kynuna Pub – Even smaller than the last town. One pub, one roadhouse, 3 houses. The pub offered a room which they called a ‘donga’. Essentially no more than a small shipping container with a steel bed on wheels and a shelf. Clean interior and outdoor public toilets. $55
4. Karumba, QLD – Gee Dees Family Cabins – Probably the nicest place I stayed in during the whole trip. Very clean and well appointed, off road parking. $90
5. Cairns, QLD – Travellers Oasis Hostel – Rated highly on HostelWorld and not a ‘party hostel’. Also allows locals (others only allow foreign passport holders). Rooms and bathrooms were clean, typical hostel dorm format. Air-conditioning was pay by the hour. Great social atmosphere and great for organising scuba diving trips to Great Barrier Reef. $26 per night in a 4 bed dorm.
6. Mackay – Gecko Backpackers – Had to call ahead as they lock the front doors after 7pm. Room was sufficient. No off-street parking. Had to park in alley way behind the hostel as on street parking was on the main road and next door to a pub. $45
7. Miriam Vale – STAR Roadhouse – They offered an equipped caravan for $45 asa the cheapest option. Small but clean. Outdoor toilet and private carpark. $45
8. Lennox Head – Lennox Head YHA – Youth Hostel – 4 bed dorm. Clean and good communal facilities. $30 with YHA member card
